The Unspoken

Understanding Beats Agreement

Dear Self
Understanding Beats Agreement

Being Understood Is Often More Erotic Than Being Agreed With

Most people assume intimacy grows when two people agree.

The same opinions.

The same priorities.

The same plans.

The same view of the world.

Agreement certainly makes life easier.

But some of the most intimate moments in relationships have very little to do with agreement.

They have to do with understanding.

The distinction is easy to miss because agreement and understanding often travel together.

When someone agrees with us, we naturally feel understood.

But the reverse is not always true.

Someone can understand us completely and still disagree.

And strangely enough, that can feel deeply connecting.

Think about the conversations that stay with us.

They are rarely the ones where somebody simply nodded along.

They are often the ones where somebody understood something we struggled to explain.

A fear.

A frustration.

A dream.

A part of ourselves that felt difficult to put into words.

And somehow, the person sitting across from us understood what we meant.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Enough to make us feel less alone inside our own experience.

Many people spend years believing conflict is what creates distance.

Sometimes it does.

But often the real distance comes from feeling misunderstood.

Feeling as though our intentions have been misread.

Our feelings have been dismissed.

Or our experience has been reduced to something simpler than it actually is.

This is why some disagreements feel surprisingly close.

And some agreements feel surprisingly empty.

Imagine two partners discussing a major life decision.

One wants to move cities.

The other doesn’t.

Neither changes their position.

Neither wins the argument.

Yet by the end of the conversation, both feel closer.

Why?

Because they finally understand what is underneath each other’s position.

The fear.

The hope.

The uncertainty.

The longing.

The disagreement remains.

The distance doesn’t.

This happens outside relationships too.

A close friend who understands why you feel stuck.

A sibling who understands why a decision is difficult.

A colleague who understands why something matters to you.

We remember these people.

Not because they always agreed with us.

Because they understood us.

Perhaps this is why understanding feels so powerful.

It tells us something agreement cannot.

Agreement says:

“I think the same thing.”

Understanding says:

“I see what this means to you.”

One creates alignment.

The other creates recognition.

And recognition is a surprisingly intimate experience.

To feel understood is to feel visible.

To feel that somebody has looked beyond the facts of a situation and recognised the emotional reality beneath it.

The thing we were actually trying to communicate all along.

This may explain why some people leave difficult conversations feeling closer than they did before.

Nothing was solved.

Nothing was fixed.

No miraculous compromise was reached.

But something important happened.

They felt known.

In long-term relationships especially, this becomes increasingly valuable.

Because over time, many disagreements are not really about the surface issue.

They are about wanting someone to understand why the issue matters.

Why it hurts.

Why it feels important.

Why it keeps returning.

And when that understanding arrives, something shifts.

Not because the problem disappears.

Because loneliness does.

Perhaps this is one of the less obvious truths about intimacy.

People are not always searching for agreement.

Very often, they are searching for recognition.

For someone who can say:

“I understand why this feels the way it does for you.”

Even if they would have chosen differently themselves.

Because agreement makes us feel correct.

But understanding makes us feel known.

And few things feel more intimate than that.
