Some Desires Feel Safe To Have And Unsafe To Share
Most people assume that if someone has a desire, they will eventually talk about it.
The reality is often more complicated.
Many desires are never acted upon.
Many are never discussed.
Some are barely admitted, even to ourselves.
Not because they are extreme.
Not because they are unrealistic.
Because sharing them feels risky.
This is particularly true in long-term relationships.
A person may trust their partner completely.
Trust them with money.
With children.
With difficult life decisions.
And still hesitate when it comes to a fantasy, preference or curiosity.
The hesitation is interesting.
Because it is rarely about the desire itself.
It is often about the consequences of revealing it.
What if they think differently of me?
What if they misunderstand what I mean?
What if I disappoint them?
What if they feel hurt?
What if they laugh?
What if they never look at me quite the same way again?
The risk is not rejection of the idea.
The risk is rejection of the person behind the idea.
This is why many conversations about desire never begin.
People often imagine that honesty requires courage.
Sometimes it requires something else.
The belief that honesty will be received with curiosity rather than judgment.
This does not mean every fantasy needs to be shared.
Nor does it mean every desire requires discussion.
But it does help explain something many couples eventually encounter.
The person we trust most is not always the person we feel safest telling everything to.
Not because they are unsafe.
Because certain parts of ourselves feel more vulnerable than others.
And perhaps this is why desire often remains hidden.
Not because it is absent.
Because revealing it can feel like revealing ourselves.
